Living with a Hope Deferred – Part 1

Carolyn McCulley | November 10, 2009 | Comments (1)

Here’s a link to the first of a three-part Focus on the Family radio series that I recorded with my friend and fellow author, Candice Watters, earlier this year. It is titled, “Singleness: Living With a Hope Deferred.” As the author of two books about marriage and family and numerous articles for single women, Candice looks at singleness from a broader cultural perspective and less from personal experience, as I’ve had to do. Add to that the masculine perspectives of Dr. James Dobson and co-host John Fuller, and we had a lively discussion!

Any discussion of a hope deferred–whether it regards singleness or any of the myriad other reasons for deflated hopes–has to end with pondering the greatness of God. Apart from doing that, a hope deferred becomes a hope dashed, which inevitably leads to despair. Therefore, I want to point you to a theologically rich but very accessible message that Dr. Wayne Grudem gave at my home church. It is called “The Greatness of God.” Dr. Grudem takes us from contemplating the mind-blowing number of stars in the universe to the complexities of DNA and cellular biology, as he provides a panorama of God’s greatness through His power, wisdom, sovereignty, and glory. Therefore, in light of Scripture’s promises and the glory of God on display in the variety and vastness of creation, will we trust God in the difficult circumstances of our lives?

I hope both resources will bolster your faith in God today, whether or not you are single.

These talks don’t seem to be available any more: I can’t find them on the Focus on the Family website. Do you know if they’re in an archive, or something? Thanks!
