Christ Our Coming King

In the late 1800’s, a New York journalist asked a theologian named A.B. Simpson if he knew when Christ was coming back to earth. “Yes,” replied Simpson. “and I will tell you if you promise to print what I say, references and all.” The reporter agreed. “Then put this down:  ‘This gospel of the kingdom [...]

A Top-Secret-John-Piper-Family Recipe Just In Time For Christmas

OK, I admit it I’m a John Piper groupie. Love everything he writes, says, thinks. Been like this since I discovered Desiring God. (Was it over a decade ago?) Two years ago, I met his wife Noel. We kinda had dinner. (Not name dropping. It’s true. One of the greatest honors of my life. I [...]

Sexual Purity Starts at Seven

By the time she is sixteen, a Christian girl has a 50/50 chance of surviving life without the experiences of sexual sin, eating disorders and depression. Parents who “did everything right” can’t understand how it happened when their daughter falls on the wrong side of the stats. What they don’t know is that they may [...]

Are You Lonely?

Albert Einstein once said, “It is strange to be known so universally and yet to be so lonely.”  You can be the most active woman in church-volunteering yourself like crazy and hosting every party-but be riddled with loneliness.
What is loneliness? Ironically it’s not being alone. The strange thing about loneliness is that we feel it [...]

Sexy enough to keep him waiting?

“I’m SEXY enough…to keep you waiting.” That’s the copy on a skimpy new tank top created by the Candies brand. Released as a part of the Candies Foundation, which exists in part to reduce teen pregnancy and encourage abstinence, it is one abstinence shirt you don’t want your daughter to wear. It sends a mixed [...]

I prayed for this child

In 2004, God opened our family to the idea of adoption. We were on a missions trip in Zambia (Africa) and fell in love with more than one orphaned child. We prayed: “God, if you want us to adopt, we are willing. Drop a child into our lap and make it clear.” I consider that the first prayer I prayed for her.

Time to Grow!

I drove to my childhood home a few weeks ago. What memories are stored there. One of them being the very live, very icky birth of baby calves. You see, my home was right across the street from an over-eaten cow pasture and my dear mom felt that every live birth was something to celebrate. [...]

Bullied at School

The statistics are staggering. An estimated 160,000 children miss school each day due to fear of bullies. Six out of ten witness a “mean girl” (or boy) attack every day. So how do you know if your child’s recurring “tummy ache” is just that or a cry for help? Or-worse yet- if your child is the bully?

Totally Listening: What’s Your Connection IQ?

At my teen girl events, I often ask attendees what they most want to change in their moms. Nearly every time a freckle-faced, braces-laden beauty raises her hand and says, “Like, she sometimes isn’t very focused when she talks to me. If she could, like, not wash the dishes or totally stop taking out the trash when I’m talking and, like, well, really, totally look me in the eyes and, like, listen!”

Fighting Fair! (Or “Never Throw Meatloaf Spirals!”)

I couldn’t believe it. Moments ago I was sitting at the kitchen table ready to sink my teeth into a huge plate of PMS-magic-cheese-stuffed meatloaf glazed in bar-b-cue sauce, mashed potatoes, corn and a freshly baked blueberry muffin! I’d been on the road for almost a week and came home extra tired, but feeling like [...]

Are you dating your daughter?

The Internet, magazines, fashion trends and television are courting your daughter and defining her sense of beauty. And by the world’s definition this can include anything from thong underwear to being an impossible size O.The best way to fight back is parent-child connectedness-spending time with her! You can educate her, send her to Bible study, take her to church and even sit her in front of a counselor but none of those things can come close to the power of mother/daughter connectedness.

Is Your Teen “Sexting?”

One out of every five teenagers surveyed, admitted to receiving or sending nude photos. That’s called “sexting.” Participating in either sending or receiving can result in criminal charges if the photos involve students under age 16. Recent news coverage has illuminated the controversial charges of young, innocent looking young men and women who have faced [...]
