Beauty
Different by Design
I awoke to a spectacular view outside my window this morning. The snow that fell overnight was the coarse, fluffy kind. The soft flakes covered everything with a layer of Narnia-like magic that the best potato flake Hollywood scene couldn’t even begin to mimic.
Did you know that scientists have developed an entire classification system for [...]
Wise vs. Wild Contrast #10: Sexual Conduct
The young believers in the church in Thessalonica were trying to figure out what their new faith meant. Some undoubtedly had promiscuous sexual histories and were carting around a bunch of sexual baggage.

Wise vs. Wild Contrast #7: Appearance
A Girl-Gone-Wise presents herself in different manner than a Girl-Gone-Wild. Her appearance doesn’t scream, “Look at me!” The way she styles her hair and does her make-up enhances her looks, but doesn’t clamor for attention. Her clothing doesn’t invite onlookers to see or imagine her nakedness. She adorns herself in a dignified, God-exalting way.

True Feminine Beauty
True beauty, in a nutshell, is found in a soul completely surrendered to Jesus Christ, a heart consumed by Him alone, and a life eagerly poured out for His sake. That is when our lives will sparkle with lasting feminine loveliness. That is when we will trade the counterfeit beauty of pop-culture for a beauty that stands out among other women like a lily among thorns.

Beauty at Any Cost
Today’s women are pursuing beauty at any cost. That’s the conclusion of a YWCA report on the consequences of America’s beauty obsession on women and girls. “From new levels of spending on cosmetic alteration to health risks and to the emergence of a ‘mean girls’ culture, the lifelong burden of an unattainable beauty and body image is taking a terrible toll in all areas of women’s lives, from economic well-being to health to interpersonal relationships.”

Is Meek for the Weak?
Is the meek person a human mouse infected with a sense of his or her own inferiority? Last month, psychotherapist Mary Jaksch gave blog subscribers some advice on “How to Ditch Meekness and Walk Tall.”… Nowadays, “meekness” carries the stigma of cowardly acquiescence. But the meekness of the Bible – the meekness manifested by God and given to the saints – is a strong, active, volitional, courageous attitude.

Exposed !
She’s a sexy, assertive, self-assured woman, and she’s perfected the subtle art of attracting men. She knows how to flirt with her eyes, seductively tilt her head, and position her body in a provocative way… Who is this woman? You might be surprised to learn that the description (with a few minor fashion updates) comes from the pages of Isaiah. And it may surprise you even more to learn that her behavior was so reprehensible to God, that he punished her and her like-minded girlfriends.

One in Christ
It never ceases to amaze me that the assault on the biblical pattern for gender comes from both sides. It is constantly necessary to fight the battle on both fronts and to strive for balance between the two extremes. The following article by Charles Swindoll seeks to do this. It was originally published in the April edition of his Insight for Living “Insight’s” Magazine (Canada).

I Am Woman
“I am strong! I am invincible! I am WOMAN!” I remember striding down the school hallway with a couple of girlfriends, belting out the words of Helen Reddy’s chart-topping song. We were perched on the verge of womanhood. And we were confident that we would be the first generation to get the meaning of womanhood right.

High Heeled Empowerment
The latest women’s shoe trend features five, six, and even seven-inched heels. According to an article in my morning paper, top designer Christian Louboutin has lauded the trend of super high heels as a sign of women “empowering themselves.” I don’t get it. How is a woman wobbling down the boulevard with sore feet and a pained expression on her face a symbol of empowerment?

Steel Magnolia
I love the phrase “Steel Magnolia” because to me it speaks to the essence of womanhood. The image melds beauty with perseverance, softness with backbone, delicacy with durability, sweetness with stamina. It reminds me of what the first man exclaimed when he saw the first woman.
